Tom's next guest is D. Watkins, an editor-at-large for Salon and a lecturer at the University of Baltimore’s Klein Family School of Communication Design.
D. is the author of the New York Times bestsellers, The Beast Side: Living and Dying While Black in America, and The Cookup: A Crack Memoir. His latest book is called We Speak for Ourselves: How Woke Culture Prohibits Progress, which has been named the 2020 One Book Baltimore selection.
One Book Baltimore is a collaboration among several local organizations, including the Enoch Pratt Free Library and Baltimore City Public Schools, to provide opportunities for the city's 7th and 8th graders, their families, and community members to connect with each other by reading the same book. Discussions and programming are being held across the city to spark conversations designed to inspire young people, and promote positive change in the community.
There will be a special One Book Baltimore virtual event on January 15, from 10-11:30am, featuring D. and two past participating authors, Nic Stone and Jason Reynolds. They will be in conversation with WYPR’s Future Cities host Wes Moore. To register for this free online event, click here.
